Vice Admiral Vivien S. Crea (* 1952 ) is a former flag officer in the United States Coast Guard . She served as Vice Commander of the Coast Guard under Adm. Thad W. Allen . Crea held the second highest office of this branch of the armed forces and was the first woman in this position in the history of the American Coast Guard. Her position was taken over by Vice Admiral David Pekoske in 2009 .

Crea initially flew the Lockheed C-130 Hercules turboprop, HH-65 Dolphin and Grumman Gulfstream II models for the Coast Guard . She was the Chief Information Officer of the Department of Information and Technology and directed the Research and Development program . Before being appointed Vice Commandant, she led the Coast Guard Atlantic Area with five districts and 63,000 employees from July 16, 2004, and was also Commander, US Maritime Defense Zone Atlantic (Commanding Admiral for the Atlantic Defense Zone ).

Crea received the following awards, among others: the Defense Superior Service Medal , the Legion of Merit (quadruple) and the Meritorious Service Medal . She studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , Central Michigan University and the University of Texas , among others .
