Vladimír Pokorný

Vladimír Pokorný (born June 12, 1922 in Podivín , South Moravia, † July 21, 1989 in Prague ) was a Czech micro-paleontologist. He was a professor of paleontology at the Charles University in Prague .

Pokorný had been a full professor at Charles University from 1961, where he headed the Institute of Paleontology from 1968 to 1986.

In the 1950s he wrote one of the first textbooks on micropalaeontology , first published in 1954 and translated into several languages. He was the founder of micropalaeontology in Czechoslovakia, about which he gave his first courses at Charles University in 1946, and an expert on the biostratigraphy of the Mesozoic . His work was of great importance for the search for oil in the Carpathian region. In addition to his micropalaeontology textbook, he also wrote an Introduction to Paleontology (1977) and a book on Paleoecology (1977).

In 1986 Pokorný became a corresponding member of the Paleontological Society and a member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (1973).
