The blue vetch is one of the largest indigenous bluebells and, like many other bluebells, is characterized by a pronounced sexual dichroism and is one of the myrmecophilic species. The upper sides of the wings of the males are colored metallic blue and have a wide black border. However, the black edge of the wing is not sharply defined. The underside of the wing of the female resembles that of Polyommatus icarus , but the contours are always more blurred than in the similar species.
