Voldemar Tago

Voldemar Tago (born August 10 . Jul / 22. August  1887 greg. In Narva ; † 18th September 1960 in Parnu , Estonia ) was an Estonian conductor .

Life and music

Voldemar Tago (also Taggo or Taggu ) studied from 1903 at the age of 16 in Russia at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory . One of his teachers there was the Estonian horn player Jaan Tamm (1875–1933).

After completing his studies in 1908, Tago worked primarily as a conductor of orchestras in Saint Petersburg and from 1919 in Estonian cities. Until 1926 he was musical director of the Vanemuine theater and concert hall in Tartu, South Estonia . He then was the conductor of the film orchestra of the Tallinn Cinema Gloria for five years until 1931 . From 1937 to 1940 he directed the Estonian Radio Radio Symphony Orchestra .

In 1940 Tago moved to the western Estonian town of Pärnu on the Baltic Sea coast. There, as well as in Haapsalu , Tartu and Narva-Jõesuu , he organized numerous summer concerts, which were very popular. In Pärnu he was musical director of the Endla concert hall and the local symphony orchestra from 1941 . When the Soviet rulers closed the orchestra in 1950, Tago largely withdrew from active musical life.

Voldemar Tago was buried in Pärnu's Alevi cemetery.
