Volker Zimmer

Volker Zimmer (born May 31, 1949 in Giessen ) is a German officer with the rank of major general and has been retired since December 2012. In his last employment he was commander of the 4th Air Force Division .

Military career

After joining the Bundeswehr in 1968, Zimmer completed training as a jet pilot at Sheppard and Luke Air Force Base until 1972 . He was then used as a pilot on the F 104G “Starfighter” in Jagdgeschwader 71 in Wittmund until 1976 . After retraining to the F-4F Phantom in California, he returned to Wittmund as an operations officer in the flying group staff.

From 1980 to 1982, Zimmer took part in the Air Force's 25th General Staff Course at the Bundeswehr Leadership Academy in Hamburg. This was followed by posts as a squadron captain with Jagdgeschwader 74 in Neuburg an der Donau , staff officer in the headquarters of the 2nd ATAF in Rheindahlen and staff officer in the headquarters of UKAIR in High Wycombe , England. From 1990 to 1992 Zimmer was the commander of the flying group in Jagdgeschwader 72 and then worked until 1993 as a consultant for operational policy matters in the air force command staff at the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn.

From 1993 to 1997 Zimmer was deployed as an air force attaché in the German embassy in London. In 1997 Zimmer returned to the Federal Ministry of Defense, where he initially worked for five years in the planning staff as head of the international situation, crises and conflicts and United Nations division and later for two years as head of the air force stationing and organization in the air force command staff.

In 2004 Zimmer took over command of the US and Canadian Army Command in Reston (Virginia) . In 2007 he returned to Germany as Deputy Head of the Air Force Office and Head of Departments with Specialist Tasks as well as Site Senior Cologne. From 2009 to December 2012, Zimmer was the commander of the 4th Air Force Division .

Zimmer is married and has two children.
