Volker Zinkernagel

Volker Zinkernagel (born March 1, 1938 in Berlin ) is a German agricultural scientist and phytomedicist .

He was a professor for phytopathology and plant protection at the universities of applied science in Hanover and at the Technical University of Munich . He is an honorary member of the German Society for Phytomedicine (DPG) of which he was a long-term board member and 1st chairman. For his international engagement he was u. a. awarded with the medals of honor of the Czech Phytomedical Society (CSR) and Slovak Phytomedical Society (SRS).

Live and act

Zinkernagel spent his school days at the elementary school in Köritz and Neustadt (Dosse) , Krs. Prignitz-Ruppin and Berlin Schöneberg (1944–1951) as well as the high schools Robert-Blum-Schule and Rückert-Schule in the scientific branch (1951–1957). School time was followed by a gardening apprenticeship in the Albert Fuhrmann company with ornamental plant cultivation and garden design in Berlin-Grunewald, with a final assistant examination; At the same time he attended the evening grammar school Peter-A.-Silbermann-Schule and received his Abitur in 1959.

After working as a gardener's assistant in the company Schneck & Söhne, tree nursery in Fellbach near Stuttgart and the company Carl Eitel, garden design in Stuttgart, he began studying horticulture at what was then the TH Hannover and received his diploma in 1965. As a doctoral student at the Institute for Plant Diseases and He wrote his dissertation on plant protection at the TH Hannover on the subject of soil-borne diseases in strawberry crops in northern Germany and their causes . He received his doctorate in 1969. He then became academic advisor for the field of microbiology at the Institute for Plant Diseases and Plant Protection at the TH Hannover.

In 1973 he was appointed academic advisor to the chair for phytopathology at the Technical University of Munich in Freising-Weihenstephan, where he continued his teaching and research work.

Further research in phytopathology led to the habilitation thesisː Investigations on the susceptibility and resistance of Lactuca sativa var. Capitata to Bremia lactucae rule (race analysis, variety-specific resistance, ultrahistological and ultrahistochemical recording of host-parasite reactions). The habilitation with Venia legendi for biology and phytopathology took place in 1984. The habilitation lecture: Morphological and physiological aspects of the pathogenesis of bacteriosis in cultivated plants . He was appointed Apl Professor in 1994, and in 2003 Zinkernagel retired.

During his time in Weihenstephan, he was the representative of the scientific staff in the faculty council of the Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture, representative of the scientific staff in the Senate, representative of the scientific staff in the assembly of the Technical University of Munich and a member of various senate and faculty commissions.

During his time as DPG chairman, he concluded various cooperation agreements with Eastern European countries. On the occasion of the General Assembly of the DPG 2018 at the University of Hohenheim , he and Falko Feldmann were awarded the Slovak Medal of Honor of the Slovak Phytomedical Society for their international commitment.

Research engagements

In the context of phytopathology, the main focus of research was in the field of diseases caused by parasitic fungi on cultivated plants; topics from virology and nematology were also worked on.

Zinkernagel supervised and reviewed 37 dissertations that dealt with phytoparasitic disorders in hops, wine, cherries, plums, raspberries, onions, lamb's lettuce, lettuce, cabbage, potatoes, wheat, barley, rye and in the ornamental plant area with damage to erics. He was the second reviewer in 10 other doctoral procedures and has supervised and graded 158 theses in horticulture and agriculture.
