Dome of the Mainz public observatory

The public observatory Mainz is one of the Community College of the City of Mainz maintained Observatory . It is located in the 35 m high tower of the Anne Frank School in the center of Mainz . The observatory is operated by an amateur astronomical association, the Astronomical Working Group of Sternfreunde Mainz und Umgebung e. V. (AAG Mainz e.V.)

The main instrument is a telescope with an aperture diameter of 15 cm and a focal length of 3 m . The beam path of this telescope is folded. The nuclear physicist Hans Ehrenberg from Mainz played a key role in its restoration and maintenance . A 12.7 cm refractor with a 95 cm focal length is also available. For observation of the Sun , a be Protuberanzenansatz and a PST ( H-alpha telescope ) are used.

A rotating dome with a diameter of 5 m is built into the ceiling of the lecture room. There are around 1200 "stars" on this, which fluoresce under black light. This simulates the sight of the sky with stars up to size class 4.5. This structure is similar to the rotating hollow globe of the Robert Mayer observatory in Heilbronn .

Until the end of 2011, the Volkssternwarte Mainz offered regular public observations of the sky and astronomical lectures. The observatory has been closed to public traffic since the beginning of 2012 because the fire protection does not meet the current legal requirements.
