The central library of the TU and UdK Berlin (also called Volkswagen University Library and University Library in the Volkswagen House ) is the joint university library of the Technical University of Berlin (TU) and the University of the Arts (UdK).

The history of the University of the Arts library can be traced back to the founding of the Academy of Arts in 1696.

The University Library of the Technical University of Berlin was founded in 1884 as the library of the Royal Technical University. The book holdings of the two previous institutions, the building academy and the trade institute , were combined under one roof to form the new library. Finally, in 1916, the holdings of the Bergakademie were also incorporated.

The entire old book inventory, with special collections from the Bauakademie founded in 1799 and the Architects and Engineers Association in Berlin , as well as the archive of the Königlich Technische Hochschule Charlottenburg, was lost towards the end of the Second World War and shortly afterwards.

The rescued historical books and plans, including the valuable collections of the horticultural library (including the private collections of Joseph Becker-Dillingen and Camillo Schneider ) and the architecture museum of the Technical University of Berlin , make up only a small part of the holdings of the university library. Since the catalog remained almost intact, parts of the old stock could be procured for replacement.

In addition to the main library, there were around 17 departmental libraries at the TU until 2004, with their open access holdings close to their institutes, departments or faculties. As part of the restructuring through the new library building, five technical and scientific department libraries and three humanities and social sciences department libraries were relocated to what is now known as the central library.

The four-storey building, which cost approx. 56.3 million euros, is the result of a decade-long attempt, the execution of which threatened to fail several times due to the costs. According to the general rules of the University Building Promotion Act , the Federal Government and the State of Berlin should initially each bear half of the costs. After the state withdrew its funding commitment in 1999, the TU offered to take over this portion itself through a loan. This added an additional 15.8 million euros in interest to the costs, which the TU also had to bear. A financing gap of 5.1 million euros that existed in the last planning phases was closed with funds from Volkswagen AG . Together with the costs of moving the previous library locations of almost 1.5 million euros, the two universities have to raise 39.4 million euros. The TU intends to raise these funds primarily by giving up previously rented buildings.

Difficulties in the procurement process delayed the start of construction again. As a general contractor, the commissioned company Epple began construction in the summer of 2002. The opening ceremony took place on December 9, 2004.

On October 18, 2004, the new building of the joint university library, officially named Volkswagen University Library, Technical University of Berlin and University of the Arts , was opened for use.

Buildings and use

The library grounds are located on the area where a hippodrome was built in 1846/1847, by Peter Joseph Lenné , instead of a pheasantry . The new mathematics building of the TU Berlin is currently being built there in 2019/20 .

The original, award-winning library design by the architect couple Jeromin from 1988 was heavily revised in the course of the long planning by the architect Walter A. Noebel - also for cost reasons. As a criticism, the building was more often compared to a “parking garage for books”. In terms of its design and its technical equipment, the library is expediently geared towards the storage of the books in the magazine and the partial open access of the holdings. A medium ordered from the magazine should be available after about 1½ to 3½ hours.

Together with the library of the University of the Arts on the fourth floor, the TU uses the first to third floors of the building. The interior of the library is characterized by three large atriums, around which shelves and workplaces are arranged. The lending desk is on the first floor of the library, along with the textbook collection and the entrance area. The closed magazine and the magazine open magazine are located in the basement.

Use of the library and all services is available to all students, academic staff, alumni and all interested parties, the latter for an annual fee of 20 euros. This includes the use and loan of most of the media available in the library, including AV media (CDs, DVDs, CD-Roms, etc.). A library card is required to borrow books. Media from the magazine can also be ordered via the reading room without a user card.

Library system

In addition to the central library, the library system at the TU Berlin also includes the departmental library for physics, the departmental library for architecture and art studies, the library of economics and management, the mathematical specialist library, the library of the Center for Research on Antisemitism, the library of the Central Facility for Modern Languages, the library of the China- Centers and more than forty smaller institute libraries.

The university archive and the architecture museum of the TU Berlin, the university publishing house and the special horticultural collection are assigned to the university library as special departments.

criticism

Toilet cubicles next to the entrance to the Volkswagen library

There have been structural problems with the noise level since moving in. Due to the open architecture, noises propagate from the ground floor to the fourth floor. The number of toilets is barely enough for the well-attended library. Toilets regularly fail for weeks due to missing compensating pipes. The library management tries to remedy the shortage temporarily with mobile toilets .
