technology

VW ID R Pikes Peak at the IAA 2019

The ID R Pikes Peak has two double wishbone axles , each with an electric motor. The system output is 500 kW (680 PS), the maximum torque 650 Nm. The torque is transmitted to both axles and distributed with a yaw control . The energy is stored in lithium-ion batteries. Due to the regulations, the batteries must be fully charged within 20 minutes. VW uses two glycerine-powered generators for this. When braking, part of the braking energy is stored back in the batteries by the electric motors with an energy recovery system. The additional torque is transmitted to the rear axle. The mass including the driver is less than 1100 kg. The body of the ID R is very flat and has large front, side and rear wings that generate the desired air flow in order to create plenty of contact pressure in the Pikes Peak hill climb despite the altitude-related low air pressure. A monocoque made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic with a steel roll cage is hidden under the body . The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.25 seconds. The maximum speed is approx. 240 km / h.

successes

On June 24, 2018 Romain Dumas broke the record at the famous Pikes Peak hill climb in Colorado (USA) with the Volkswagen ID R with a time of 7: 57.148 minutes. It was the first time that the route was completed in less than 8 minutes.

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2018 (in UK) Romain Dumas set a new record for electric vehicles in the ID R with 43.05 seconds. A year later in 2019, he improved the time to 39.9 seconds and now holds the course record.

Both Auto Bild Motorsport and Top Gear Magazine named the ID R "Racing Car of the Year" in 2018.

On the Nordschleife (in Germany) in June 2019 Romain Dumas improved the record time for electric vehicles to 6: 05.336 minutes (average speed 206.96 km / h) with a variant of the ID R optimized for top speeds.

Since September 2, 2019 Romain Dumas has held the (first) record with the ID.R with 7: 38.585 minutes on the 10.9 km long winding mountain road on Himmelstor Mountain in China.
