Voltaire T. Gazmin is a former Filipino lieutenant general and politician .

biography

Gazmin, a godson of the former Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr. , joined the armed forces of the Philippines ( Armed Forced of Philippines ) after attending school and was a first lieutenant in prison in 1973 after Aquino's arrest due to the martial law imposed by dictator Ferdinand Marcos .

He was later between March 1, 1986 and June 29, 1992 with the rank of Colonel commander of the Presidential Security Group of the then President Corazon Aquino . During the tenure of President Joseph Estrada , he was Defense Attaché at the Embassy in the United States and most recently as Lieutenant General Commanding General of the Army and thus Army Chief of the AFP and then retired. He was later appointed ambassador to Cambodia .

After the elections in the Philippines in 2010 , Voltaire Gazmin was elected on June 30, 2010 by President Benigno Aquino III. appointed Secretary of National Defense in his cabinet . Immediately after taking office, he ordered an impartial investigation into the use of public defense funds and the dismissal of a senior officer by his predecessor, Norberto Gonzales . He had previously dismissed the Chief Accountant of the Ministry of Defense, Leticia Coronel-Obnimago, for criticizing the use of the funds.
