The biblical parable of the fishing net is a parable of Jesus , which transfers the handling of fishermen with “bad” and “good” fish to the eschatological separation of “bad” and “righteous”. It can only be found in the Gospel according to Matthew ( Mt 13.47-50  EU ) and is therefore a special Matthew item .

text

The text reads according to the standard translation :

47 Again the kingdom of heaven is like a net that has been thrown into the sea and catches fish of all kinds. 48 When it is full, they pull it out on the bank, sit down and gather the good ones into vessels, but throw the bad ones away. 49 So it will be at the end of the world: the angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous. 50 and will throw them into the furnace of fire; there will be weeping and chattering teeth. "

- Matthew 13 : 47-50  EU

Remarks

The parable belongs to the Matthean special property. This can also be seen in the use of language. The expressions οὖτος ἔσται, ἡ συντέλεια τῶν αἰῶνος, ἀφορίζειν and others can only be found in the Evangelist Matthew .

interpretation

Most of the commentators regard the parable of the fishnet as a shortened version of the parable of the weeds under the wheat or as a commentary scheme on the weed parable.

Eberhard Jüngel emphasizes the difference between collection (fishing) and divorce (sorting the fishermen) in the parable . This difference should be understood eschatologically and the essence of the rule of God . This is also indicated by the threatening closing formula of " howling and chattering teeth ," which is probably an editorial addition by Matthew and underlines the punitive aspect of the Last Judgment .
