Parable of the Precious Pearl

Painting The parable of the precious pearl by Domenico Fetti

The parable of the Precious Pearl told by Jesus of Nazareth is only passed down in the Gospels in the New Testament of the Bible through the Gospel according to Matthew ( Mt 13 : 45-46  EU ) and thus belongs to the Matthew special property . A variant of this parable can also be found in the non-canonical Gospel of Thomas in Logion 76.

content

Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant who looked for good pearls and finally found a pearl of great value. He then sold everything he had in order to acquire this precious pearl.

interpretation

There are several possible interpretations of the precious pearl. One possibility is to see the pearl as a symbol of Christ.

Furthermore, the pearl is also used as a promise of salvation, as the birth of God in the soul, as a warning to put the kingdom of heaven ahead of the earthly, or, according to Augustine, equates with love for one's brother and for God.

The parable follows directly on from the parable of the treasure in the field and is similar in structure and statement.

Artistic reception

Various artists have rezipiert the parable, including the Italian painter of the Baroque Domenico Fetti , whose painting The Parable of the Pearl of Great Price in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna is seen.
