New wine in old bottles

The parable told by Jesus of Nazareth New Wine in Old Bottles is used in the Gospels in the New Testament of the Bible through the Gospel according to Matthew ( Mt 9,14-17  EU ), the Gospel according to Luke ( Lk 5,33-39  EU ) as well the Gospel according to Mark ( Mk 2,21–22  EU ) handed down. A variant of this parable can also be found in the non-canonical Gospel of Thomas in Logion 47.

Jesus is asked why his disciples did not fast like the Pharisees or like the disciples of John the Baptist . Jesus replies that the wedding guests cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them. But days would come when the bridegroom would be taken from them and they would then fast. This is followed by a parable that no one would use a rag from a new dress to mend an old one, otherwise the new dress would also be torn and the rag from the new would not match the old. This is followed by another parable that no one puts new wine into old bottles. Otherwise the new, bubbly wine will tear the old, brittle wine skins, it will spill and spoil the skins. Therefore, new wine should be filled into new bottles.

interpretation

A predominant interpretation sees the old, symbolized by the old wineskins or by the Pharisees and also the followers of John the Baptist , as Judaism , while the new, symbolized by the new wine or the disciples of Jesus , represents Christianity . So here the old covenant is contrasted with the new covenant .

reception

The German idiom "old wine in new bottles" is derived from this parable and means to present an old content in new packaging or an old idea as new and exists as a phrase in a multitude of variations.
