River course
The Prophet River rises in the Bruce Ridge in the Muskwa Ranges in the northern Rocky Mountains at an altitude of about 2000 m . It flows in an easterly direction between Northern Rocky Mountains Provincial Park and Redfern-Keily Provincial Park with several waterfalls along the course of the river. The river Hewer Creek flows north of Mount Boe. Later, Kravac Creek and Richards Creek flow into the Prophet River. North of Klingzut Mountain, at the transition from the mountains to the plains , the Besa River meets the Prophet River.
Milliken Creek and Bat Creek reach the Prophet River east of the Rocky Mountains. The Minaker River, Bunch Creek, Dethseda Creek, Chipesia Creek and Sass Creek also flow into the Prophet River. This turns to the northeast. As it flows through the Prophet River Wayside Provincial Park, the river changes direction to the north. The Alaska Highway runs parallel to the river for a short distance. Eventually the Prophet River reaches the Muskwa River, into which it flows southwest of Fort Nelson at an altitude of 304 m .
The Muskwa River is a tributary of the Fort Nelson River , which in turn is a tributary of the Liard River . Thus, the Prophet River belongs to the catchment area of the Mackenzie River , which flows into the Arctic Ocean .
