The Bella Coola River is a major river on the Pacific side of the Coast Mountains in southern British Columbia , Canada .

The place Bella Coola , which is the historical and former center of the Nuxalk people, is located at the mouth of the river in the North Bentinck Arm .

The Bella Coola River is actually just the lower reaches of a much larger river, which changes its name at various points. The river arises at the confluence of the Talchako River and Atnarko River . The main source river is the Atnarko River. The river forms the northern limit of that subset of the Coast Mountains known as the Pacific Ranges ; The large volcanic shield and plateau of the Rainbow Range lies immediately north and east of the Atnarko River, while beyond this and the Dean River are the Kitimat Ranges , which are counted among the Pacific Ranges.
