The Stuart River is a river in the northeast of the Canadian province of British Columbia .

It flows 110 km from Stuart Lake to its confluence with the Nechako River and drains part of the Nechako Plateau . Its hydrological catchment area covers 16,200 km². The total length of the river to the source of the Driftwood River tributary is 415 km.

The Stuart River is important to the history of British Columbia. In 1808 it formed part of Simon Fraser's expedition on the Fraser River down to what is now Vancouver . Discovered by Fraser's assistant James McDougall , it was explored upstream in 1806. It was named after another of Fraser's assistants, John Stuart (1780–1847).

During the Omineca gold rush , steamboats traveled from the Quesnel area on the Fraser River up the river to Stuart Lake.

A large part of its flow length lies in the two sub-areas of the Stuart River Provincial Park .

The Stuart River is one of the 20 rivers in the British Columbia Heritage Rivers System .

Hydrology

On its 110 km long stretch of river, the Stuart River has a gradient of about 50 m. The Stuart River drains an area of ​​16,200 km². The mean discharge at the outflow from Stuart Lake is 131 m³ / s. The highest runoffs occur in summer in the months of June to August.
