Fort St. James is a community in the center of the Canadian province of British Columbia . The fort that gave this community its name was named a National Historic Site of Canada in 1948.
North of Fort St. James is Mount Pope Provincial Park , west of Paarens Beach Provincial Park .
history
The community is based on the establishment of Fort St. James in 1806. The fort was founded by Simon Fraser , who explored British Columbia for the North West Company . The place was known as the Stuart Lake Post and was one of the earliest European settlements in New Caledonia , as the Hudson's Bay Company called British Columbia. John Stuart and James McDougall were two of Simon Fraser's assistants who checked the usability of the area of rivers studied for transport. The fort and the adjacent lake were named after these names. The fort became the property of the Hudson's Bay Company when the North West Company was acquired by them. Forts St. James became the center of New Caledonia, Canada , a fur trading district of the Hudson's Bay Company.
Although there was little fur trade in this area, the fort existed as a trading post until 1952.
Demographics
The 2011 census showed a population of 1,691 inhabitants for the municipality. The community's population has increased by an above-average 25.3% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in the rest of the province of British Columbia grew by 7.0%.
Geography and climate
The parish is located on the southeastern shore of Stuart Lake , where the lake flows into the Stuart River . The climate is continental, the winters are snowy.

politics
The granting of local self-government for the municipality took place on December 31, 1947 ( incorporated as Village Municipality ).
Mayor of the parish is Rob MacDougall. Together with four other citizens, he forms the council of the municipality (council).
Infrastructure
Fort St. James is at the north end of Highway 27 , which leads to the Yellowhead Highway at Vanderhoof . About 4 kilometers south of the community is a regional airport, Fort St. James (Perison) Airport . The airfield ( IATA airport code : YJM, ICAO code : CYJM) only has an asphalt runway 1,219 meters long.
