The Campbell River is a 35 km long river on northeast Vancouver Island in the Canadian province of British Columbia . It is named after the physician Samuel Campbell of the British Royal Navy , who sailed the coastal waters with Captain George Henry Richards on the ships HMS Plumper and HMS Hecate .

River course

The river forms the drain of Upper Campbell Lake . This is regulated by the Strathcona Dam and forms a single reservoir with water level heights of more than 212  m together with Buttle Lake to the south . 3 km below Upper Campbell Lake, the Campbell River reaches the upper end of Campbell Lake , also flow-regulated. Below the dam, the river flows north one mile to the top of the five-mile long John Hart Lake . Below the John Hart Dam , the Campbell River flows another 8 km in an easterly direction to its mouth. On the lower reaches are the Deer Falls and Elk Falls . These are located within Elk Falls Provincial Park . The river finally flows into an estuary near the city of the same name , which opens to the Discovery Passage north of the Strait of Georgia . The Kwak'wala name for the river and for the settlement near its mouth is Tla'mataxw .

Hydrology

The Campbell River drains an area of 1750 km². The mean discharge 4 km above the mouth is 99 m³ / s. The river carries a lot of water most of the year. Only in the summer months of August and September does the runoff noticeably decrease.

Fish fauna

This estuary is home to all five salmon species ( king salmon , silver salmon , pink salmon , ketal salmon and sockeye salmon ) as well as sea trout ( steelhead and cutthroat ). In the river system are rainbow trout , cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden trout before.

The Campbell River has had the status of a British Columbia Heritage River since March 7, 2000 .

Use of hydropower

There are three reservoirs along the river, each with a hydroelectric power station.

Strathcona hydropower plant

The Strathcona Dam was built by the BC Power Commission between 1955 and 1958 . He dams Upper Campbell Lake . The target is 220.98  m . Above 212  m , Upper Campbell Lake and Buttle Lake form a single body of water. The Strathcona hydropower plant is located below Upper Campbell Lake . In 1968 the power plant was expanded to include a second unit. It has a total installed capacity of 65 MW.

Ladore hydroelectric power station

Below Campbell Lake is the Ladore hydropower plant . The dam was completed in 1949. The power plant was completed in 1957. It has two units with a total installed capacity of 47 MW.

John Hart Hydroelectric Power Station

5 km above the mouth, below the Elk Falls , on the right bank of the river is the John Hart hydropower plant, which was commissioned by the BC Power Commission in 1947 . The water from John Hart Lake reaches six units via three pressure lines . These have a total installed capacity of 126 MW. The power plant, which is now operated by BC Hydro , has been modernized since spring 2014. The measures should be completed in 2018/2019.

Origin of name

The river was named after Dr. Samuel Campbell , who was ship's doctor on the HMS Plumper from 1857 to 1861 . Campbell Bay on Mayne Island and Samuel Island were also named after him. Also Campbell Point on Loughborough Inlet and Campbell Island , on which the settlement Bella Bella is located.
