From Pioneer to Millionaire is a five-part documentary series about the history of the German entrepreneurs Henry John Heinz , Henry Steinway , Levi Strauss , John Jacob Astor and William Edward Boeing in America.
The authors and directors are Ira Beetz, Christoph Weinert, Kai Christiansen and Achim Scheunert. The documentary was produced by Gebrueder Beetz Filmproduktion in coproduction with NDR and in collaboration with ARTE , editor Ulrike Dotzer in 2009 and funded by Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig Holstein GmbH and Nordmedia GmbH . The premiere took place on January 25, 2010 in Hamburg. The first broadcast was on ARTE on January 15, 2010.

The documentary series tells the story of German entrepreneurs in America in five episodes: how they asserted themselves abroad and went from pioneers to millionaires. With re-enacted scenes, partly as yet unpublished archive material, diary entries and interview sequences with the descendants, we tell a story of the German "self-made men" who founded a company with a brilliant idea and became famous for fame, honor and fortune in the United States of America 19th century arrived.

5.5 million Germans left their homeland between 1820 and 1915 . Much of the emigration fever can still be felt today. Almost 60 million Americans have German ancestors, former craftsmen, housekeepers and peddlers. The emigrants or their direct descendants include absolute top starters such as Löb Strauss , Heinrich Engelhardt Steinway, Johann Jakob Astor or Henry John Heinz.
