The Chapelle du Vorbourg ( Chapelle Notre-Dame du Vorbourg , dt. Vorburgkapelle ) is located below the old castle ruins Vorbourg ( Vorburg ) in the canton of Jura in Switzerland . It is enthroned just under 1.9 kilometers as the crow flies from Delémont on a high rock above the Birs , which forms a tight clus there . The castle ruins and chapel are clearly visible from the road from Basel to Delémont.
history
The origins of the Vorbourg are unclear. The castle of Vorbourg was first mentioned in the 10th century. In the course of time it had different owners, including from the French side. It is even said that in 1049 Pope Leo IX. the chapel was consecrated. He himself came from the von Egisheim family, who were also among the owners of the castle. The lower castle with chapel was built between 1150 and 1350. Damaged by the Basel earthquake , it was reconstructed in 1365. In the Swabian War , it was 1499 again destroyed and was finally abandoned in the 16th century. The Chapelle Notre-Dame du Vorbourg has enjoyed great popularity in the Jura as a Marian pilgrimage site since the 17th century.
present
Since 1995 the chapel has been in the care of the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Saint-Benoît de Port-Valais in Le Bouveret in the Valais. Services are held here.
