The front Austrian mint of the margraviate Burgau was from 1767 to 1805 in its main place of today's large district town Günzburg . From 1780 to 1805, the Maria-Theresia-Taler , which is still minted today, was produced here. The mint is referred to in catalogs as the Günzburg mint . Today, the Günzburg town hall is housed in the building complex of the former “mint” .

history

The former front Austrian mint , a three-storey, elongated wing with a hipped roof attached to the south wing of the palace , is located in a side street branching off from the market square, at the corner of Rathausgasse / Hofgasse, in the immediate vicinity of the “Brauereigasthof zur Münz”. The building was planned, executed and completed in 1767 by the Swabian master builder Joseph Dossenberger . There were four screw presses on the first floor . The administration was located on the upper floors. The required coin metals silver and copper were obtained from the nearby imperial city of Augsburg . Only silver coins were minted in the inner city mint. A second mint was located outside the city wall , together with a hammer mill and the silver separator. Here were copper coins embossed. From 1772 to 1775, mintings were also carried out for the Hochstifte Augsburg, Strasbourg, Constance, the Principality of Fürstenberg and the imperial city of Ulm. In 1805, when Günzburg was conquered by Napoleonic troops during the third coalition war , the mint was closed. Today the town hall is housed in its rooms.
