The 1637 m long Vrmac Tunnel is a road tunnel near the city of Kotor in southwest Montenegro . It crosses the Vrmac mountain , which lies in the Bay of Kotor between Kotor and Tivat . The north portal is in Kotor while the south portal is a little northeast of Tivat.

construction

Due to the traffic-related importance of the tunnel, it was opened to traffic in a semi-finished state in 1991, as no funds were available for complete completion in the foreseeable future. From 2004 to the beginning of 2007, the tunnel was then completely expanded by the Austrian construction company Strabag . Since then it has complied with European standards.

meaning

The Vrmac Tunnel plays an important role in the transport links between the Bay of Kotor and Tivat, as before the tunnel was built there was only a winding, narrow pass road over the Vrmac or an even narrower road at the foot of the Vrmac along the Bay of Kotor.
