Vrmac ( Serbian : Врмац , German also Vermac ) is a peninsula up to 765 m high in the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro .

geography

The Vrmac peninsula lies in a wedge shape between the basins of Kotor and Tivat and narrows the access to the inner bays of Risan and Kotor to only 340 meters ( Verige strait ). The peninsula is made up of flysch and therefore shows interesting facia , which form a special contrast to the opposite high karst due to small erosive valleys, especially from Kotor . The north side of the peninsula in particular drops steeply to the sea, while the slope on the south side is significantly shallower. The highest point on the peninsula is the Sveti Ilija with a height of 765  m. i. J. , followed by Velji vrch with 712  m. i. J. Height. Between the two lies the Vrdola saddle. Unlike the surrounding karst, the Vrmac peninsula has springs and periodically flowing waters.

history

In the past, the Vrmac was of great strategic importance as the Verige Street formed the border between the Ottoman Empire and the Venetian possessions. At the end of the 19th century, Austria-Hungary built strong fortifications on the peninsula to secure the border with Montenegro, such as the Vermac plant , which protected the Bay of Kotor, the second most important military port of the monarchy.

The Vrmac peninsula is now mainly populated on its coasts. Here are the cities of Tivat, Lepetane , Stoliv and Prčanj , in the interior the villages of Gornja Lastva and Gorna Bogdašići.

traffic

The Vrmac Tunnel , which opened in 2007, plays an important role in the transport links between the Bay of Kotor and Tivat, since before the tunnel was built, only a winding, narrow pass road over the Vrmac and an even narrower road at the foot of the Vrmac along the Bay of Kotor duration. A car ferry runs across the Verige Strait between Lepetane and Kamenari . The Tivat Airport is the second largest international airport in Montenegro.
