The Vrtba Garden (Czech: Vrtbovská zahrada ) in the Lesser Town of Prague is one of the most important baroque gardens in Prague and in Europe north of the Alps. It is a first class cultural monument and is registered with UNESCO .

The small lane between the two main wings of the Vrtba Palace at Karmelitská 25 (corner of Tržiště), just a few meters south of the Lesser Town Ring , serves as a passage into the palace grounds and provides access to the Vrtba Garden. The garden is owned by the City of Prague, was extensively renovated between 1990 and 1998, and is open to the public in summer. The garden is a popular place for weddings, receptions, and the occasional concert.

History and layout

The garden was built in the years 1715–1720 for Count Jan Josef z Vrtby (1669–1734), burgrave of Prague Castle , by the Prague architect and builder František Maximilián Kaňka on the lower slope of the Petřín hill immediately below that of Count Sezima z Vrtby , Jan Josef's grandfather, built Palais Vrtba in the years 1627–1631 in the former vineyards of the palace. It contains sculptures by Matthias Bernhard Braun and in the Sala terrena , which connects the palace and the garden, frescoes by Václav Vavřinec Reiner . The stucco work was done by Tomasi Soldati . The garden, laid out on three levels, contains boldly curved flights of stairs, symmetrically planted terraces connected with balustrades , ornamental ponds and a viewing pavilion with a beautiful view of the Lesser Town in Prague with the St. Nicholas Church and the Hradcany .

Stamp

On October 11, 2006, the Ministry of Informatics of the Czech Republic issued a 23 × 40 mm special stamp “Prague Vrtba Garden” with a face value of CZK 7.50, designed by Karel Zeman and engraved by Jaroslav Tvrdoň.
