Vulcan is a place in the Canadian province of Alberta . It is located halfway between the towns of Calgary and Lethbridge . Due to its name, which corresponds to the home planet of a people from the science fiction series Star Trek , the city became a small tourist attraction.

Vulcan is located in the plains of Alberta and has 1836 inhabitants (2011). The place is in the administrative district Vulcan County , which has 3875 inhabitants (without the place Vulcan, as of 2011). The area around Vulcan is used extensively for agriculture, mainly for the cultivation of wheat , rapeseed and barley .

Vulcan would be an insignificant place, no different from the other small settlements on the Alberta plains, had it not been for the successful marketing of its name, which corresponds to the fictional planet Vulcan, home of the Vulcans in Star Trek. The Star Trek convention Galaxyfest (formerly VulCon ) takes place in Vulcan every year and attracts hundreds of fans of the series. In addition, the city annually organizes the Spock Days Rodeo , named after the figure Mr. Spock , the most famous Vulcan.
