Vuze (pronounced views ; until 2008: Azureus ) is a free file sharing program for the Bit Torrent protocol.

The application was released on SourceForge in June 2003 under the name Azureus . With version 3.1.0.0 from June 16, 2008 it was renamed to Vuze . Vuze is written in Java and therefore supports Windows , Linux , Unix , macOS and in principle every platform for which Java is available. However, the SWT library was used to display the graphical user interface ( GUI ) , which limits the ability to run to those operating systems for which SWT is available. Vuze is one of the most extensive BitTorrent clients, but it also uses a comparatively large amount of resources .

Functions

While a torrent (desired (target) file, not to be confused with the ".torrent" (control) file) is being downloaded, it may be possible to a. the following can be observed:

  • which files are and have been downloaded
  • the number of seeds (complete sources) and peers (incomplete sources) and the availability calculated from them
  • what percentage of a torrent has already been transmitted and the number of available and missing parts of it
  • is downloaded by whom, the transmit and receive data rate of its trading partner, its IP address , including port , used client and other options, if you own Super Seed is
  • your own send and receive rates, the remaining time, file and tracker information
  • the average swarm speed (good for comparing with your own reception rate)

The “Plugins” menu makes it very easy to install additional plugins and thus expand the range of functions of Vuze. SafePeer and Country Locator , for example, are popular . The Nodezilla plug-in makes it possible to expand the functionality of the system by accessing the “Nodezilla Grid Network”, allowing “. Torrent” files to be distributed on websites without prior publication. An experimental plug-in called “Ono” from Aqualabs at Northwestern University analyzes the network topography and tries to increase the speed yield by intelligent selection of geographically neighboring nodes. A modification of the Azureus client called BitTyrant by a working group at the University of Washington tries to increase efficiency and fairness of exchange by strategically giving preference to peers with a good upload / download ratio.

Thanks to the added in version 2.3.0.0 PeerExchange- and DHT function ( distributed hash table ; Engl .: DHT - distributed hash table ) are downloads possible even if the original tracker fails, because then connections to peers (swarming) over DHT can be produced.

From version 2.4.0.0 onwards, Vuze (at that time still Azureus) supports encryption that is supposed to help avoid sniffing by providers.

With Zudeo, Azureus started a platform for the exchange of free videos and pieces of music. With Azureus 3.0, the project became an integral part of the original client and was officially renamed Vuze on April 5, 2007.

The integration of Vuze created a turning point between the last version without Vuze (2.5.0.4) and the subsequent versions with Vuze (from 3.0). Many users prefer the old version and have therefore never updated to a version with Vuze. According to the statistics of some of the larger trackers, Azureus 2.5.x is still much more popular than Azureus 3.x. However, the old interface can also be set again in the latest version (via Tools → Configuration → Interface → Start → Show interface selection ).

While the changelog from version 3.0.4.0 (December 2007) still had the name “Azureus Vuze” in parallel, with version 3.1.0.0 of June 16, 2008 the application was completely renamed “Vuze”. The slogans "Azureus - now called Vuze" and "Vuze, formerly known as Azureus" can be found on the homepage.

Awards

  • SourceForge honored Azureus in September 2004 by naming it Project of the Month .
  • As part of the 2006 SourceForge.net Community Choice Awards was Azureus chosen by the user community in the first place.

criticism

The developers came under fire when it turned out that the data collected about the users of the software was more extensive than was reported to the end user. However, these functions were removed with version 2.5.0.4, although the developers had decided not to publish any more versions under the name Azureus after version 2.5.0.2 .
