Wälti Bänziger, who was accused in 1621 of illegal currency exchange transactions, cultivated intensive relationships with Thal and Rheineck , whose strong market position he knew how to use for business purposes. Endowed with great fortune, he was the dominant personality on Kurzenberg . He made the hamlet of Wolfhalden the preferred meeting place for the Kurzenberg municipal authorities, which was one of the reasons for the dispute over the location of the Kurzenberg church in 1652.
