The building around 1900

The Wüstenfeldsche Palais is a listed building in Hann. Münden in southern Lower Saxony . The palais-like town house was built in 1804 by the entrepreneur Christian Bernhard Wüstefeld in the classicism style. At that time it was considered the most representative civil building in the area.

description

The Wüstenfeldsche Palais is on the property at Kirchplatz 5 opposite the St. Blasius Church . The property used to be number 253. A half-timbered house with a pigsty, shed and courtyard was built on it in 1446 . It was owned by the church and served as an apartment for the pastor of St. Blaise's Church. The Mündener long-distance dealer Christian Bernhard Wüstefeld acquired the property in 1804. In the same year he had the palace built after the previous building, which had possibly burned down, was demolished. He belonged to the fifth generation of a family of traders that had been based in Münden since 1685.

The house served its owners as a residential building. According to a tax certificate from 1867, it had 10 rooms, a hall, two kitchens and 11 chambers on four floors. In addition, there were ancillary rooms such as a cellar, attic, laundry and pantry.

In 1821 King George IV was the first monarch to visit his German homeland in 66 years, including Münden. He chose the Wüstenfeldsche Palais as his quarters, as the Welfenschloss Münden was out of the question due to its former use as a grain store.

The building was owned by the Wüstefeld family until 1919 and was then sold to the Hessischer Bankverein in Kassel. In the same year there was a structural change to the facade. In 1922 the Bankverein was taken over by Commerzbank , who owned the building until 1955. Then it went to the Sparkasse Münden , which has had a branch there since 1961.
