The Evangelical Lutheran St. Blasius Church is a listed church building in Hann. Münden , a town in the district of Göttingen ( Lower Saxony ). The three-aisled, Gothic hall church stands in the middle of the old town, surrounded by historic houses.

History and architecture

Excavations in the years 1972 to 1973 document three previous churches. Around 1000 there was a chapel on an almost square floor plan; around 1150 it was extended to the west with a Romanesque building. From 1180 to 1190 an extension to the Romanesque basilica with round apses in the side aisles was made, which later burned down.

The present building was erected in three construction phases on the foundation walls of the Romanesque church. In the period from 1260 to 1280 the first yoke and the choir were built , a partition wall served as a temporary closure to the west. According to an inscription to the left of the south portal, the second construction phase was completed from 1487 to 1519 with the addition of a sacristy and the substructure of the tower . The ship was also completed during this time.

The year 1488 has been preserved above the rise of the tower. The tower was completed in the third phase of construction from 1535 to 1584. It is octagonal, 58 meters high, integrated into the building and crowned with a Welschen hood . The gable roof towers over very little. From 1584-1929 monitored towers from here over the city.

The 46 meter long and 23 meter wide church has been Protestant since 1540. There is space for around 900 people. The galleries and new stalls were built in from 1704. During the flood in 1799, several of the tombs collapsed , whereupon a floor made of planks was installed. Extensive renovation measures took place from 1881 to 1897; the medieval windows were replaced and the floor renewed. A heater was installed in the new extension on the north side of the choir. The gallery on the south side was demolished in 1939. Since the northern gallery was demolished in 1958, the building has again had the character of a Gothic hall church . During the renovation work from 1972 to 1976, the abandonment of the central aisle created a new room concept, the altar was placed in the middle, the pews were dismantled and replaced with movable chairs. The baptismal font was in the north side chapel. Gerhard Hausmann designed the new windows .

Furnishing

fresco

In the 16th century, a number of frescos decorated the interior as biblia pauperum , only one of which has survived . On the belt arch , between the two pillars of the tower, it represents the third of Anna . It was uncovered in the 1980s and centuries-old layers of paint were removed. The state of preservation is described as good, and it was financed by the State Ministry of Culture.

Mary and her mother are seated facing each other on a Gothic chest bench. Maria wears her long hair open, she is crowned and depicted as the queen of heaven. Her robe is blue. The mother Anna wears a hood and the clothes of a bourgeois woman of the 16th century. The unclothed baby Jesus stands on Anna's lap. His mother holds out an apple for it to reach for. The three figures wear a halo. To protect the colors, the image is not illuminated.

The Duchess Elisabeth I appointed Corvinius as state superintendent in 1542, he also preached in St. Blaise.
