Company history

The history of building society savings and loan associations in German-speaking countries goes back to the foundation of the building society for everyone in Bielefeld in 1885. The idea of continental home savings in its modern form was not developed by Georg Kropp until the beginning of the 1920s and led to the establishment of the Bausparkasse of the Friends of Wüstenrot in the small Swabian town of Wüstenrot near Heilbronn.

The spread of the building society savings concept in Austria started in Salzburg. In the course of a lecture by Siegfried Gmelin on November 30, 1925 in Salzburg, these ideas were also disseminated in Austria. In the same year, Gmelin founded the building society of the Friends of Wüstenrot, the first building society in Austria to be organized as a cooperative until 1997 . As early as 1926, the first private home co-financed by Wüstenrot was handed over in Hallein . Since 1930, Wüstenrot has been the only Austrian building society that does not have its headquarters in the federal capital Vienna. The first administration building was on Auerspergstrasse and was inaugurated on December 6th and 7th, 1930. At that time, the Bausparkasse had 12,000 savers with a contract sum of 211 million schillings.

In 1997, the banking operations were spun off from the cooperative building society to the new building society Wüstenrot AG, which was founded for this purpose. Many of the partnerships entered into with large credit institutions since 1969 have now led to equity investments in the new stock corporation . In 2004 the Bausparkasse Wüstenrot took over the LandesBausparkasse (LBA).

In November 1976 the subsidiary Wüstenrot Versicherungs-AG was founded. In 2001 there was a merger with Volksfürsorge-Jupiter Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG and the associated expansion of business activities to include property and casualty insurance . As a universal insurer, the company has been trading as Wüstenrot Versicherungs-AG ever since and has developed into one of the largest insurance companies in Austria to this day.

Today the Bausparkasse Wüstenrot and its former subsidiary operate under the joint umbrella of Wüstenrot Verwaltungs und Dienstleistungen GmbH . In Austria, Wüstenrot Bausparkasse and Wüstenrot Versicherungs-AG have 150 branches , which are mostly shared ; both companies are represented in Hungary , Croatia and Slovakia beyond the Austrian borders . The branches in the Czech Republic were taken over by the German Wüstenrot Group in 2015 and in return received the Slovak branches.
