Władysław Dobrowolski (born January 2, 1896 in Będzin , † February 25, 1969 in Warsaw ) was a Polish sword fencer and athlete .

Life

Władysław Dobrowolski only began to play fencing more seriously when he was 35 years old. In 1934 he won bronze with the team at the World Fencing Championships in Warsaw . He took part in the Olympic Games three times : in 1924 he started over 100 meters and was eliminated in fifth place in his heat. Eleven times he was Polish champion in athletics over various distances. At the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , he moved into the final round with the Saber team, in which Poland took third place behind Italy and Hungary . In addition to Dobrowolski, Marian Suski , Leszek Lubicz , Adam Papée , Władysław Segda and Tadeusz Friedrich won bronze. In 1936 in Berlin he just missed another medal win with the team in fourth place. In the individual, he was eliminated in the preliminary round.

Dobrowolski fought in the Polish-Soviet War and graduated from the officers' school in 1924. He reached his highest rank with the major . During the Second World War in 1939 he took part in the defense of the country against the Wehrmacht during the attack on Poland . After the war he was active as a coach and manager in sport and in 1957 became the first president of the Polish Luge Federation. He also wrote numerous sports books.

His son was the satirist and actor Jerzy Dobrowolski .
