Włodzimierz Józef Wesołowski

Włodzimierz Józef Wesołowski (* 1929 in Borysławice , city of Błaszki , Łódź Voivodeship ) is a Polish sociologist and political scientist . He is known for his theoretical and empirical work on elites , especially political elites .

Wesołowski obtained a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Łódź in 1952 and a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Warsaw in 1954 . In 1961 he received his doctorate there in sociology , and his habilitation in 1964 . From 1964 to 1968 he was assistant professor of sociology at the University of Łódź, from 1968 to 1982 at the University of Warsaw. From 1972 to 1999 he also held a professorship at the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) and was head of the department for social structures there from 1972 to 1980 and head of the department for power structures from 1991 to 1999. From 1974 to 1981 Wesołowski was also deputy director for research at the Institute for Fundamental Problems of Marxism-Leninism (Instytut Podstawowych Problemów Marksizmu-Leninizmu) of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers' Party PZPR.

Since 1993 Wesołowski has been professor at the Graduate School of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFiS PAN). Today (as of 2019) he still belongs to the scientific advisory board. Since 1995 he has also been a professor at the Collegium Civitas , a private university in Warsaw. Here he was a member of the Senate (at least) until 2018. From 2002 to 2005 he was President of the Polish Sociological Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Socjologiczne).

In 1988 Wesołowski was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 1993 to the Academia Europaea . In 1989 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki .
