Wilmot Reed Hastings Jr. (born October 8, 1960 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American entrepreneur . He is one of the founders and managing directors of the media company Netflix .

Life

After Hastings graduated from Bowdoin College in 1983 , he served in the Peace Corps . As a motivation, Hastings called "a combination of a thirst for adventure and a sense of duty". In this capacity he taught mathematics at a high school in Swaziland from 1983 to 1985 . Hastings attributes his affinity for entrepreneurship in part to his time in the Peace Corps:

"Once you've traveled through Africa with $ 10 in your pocket, starting a business doesn't seem so intimidating."

After returning to the States, Hastings took a master's degree in computer science from Stanford University , graduating in 1988.

Hastings founded his first company, Pure Software, in 1991. The company sold software that was supposed to detect errors in program code. In 1996 the company merged with Atria Software to become Pure Atria. In 1997, Rational Software bought the company. In 1997, Hastings and Marc Randolph founded the online video library Netflix . The company is based in Los Gatos , California .

Hastings has been a member of the Facebook Board of Directors since 2011 . Hastings was also a member of Microsoft's board of directors from 2007 to 2012 . In 2018 Hastings was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Reed Hastings is a billionaire . According to Forbes' list “ The World's Billionaires ”, his net worth was approximately USD 5.7 billion in 2020 . This puts Reed Hastings at number 384 on Forbes' 2020 list of the richest people in the world.

He is married to Patricia "Patty" Ann Quillin and has two children.
