The WACA Ground is a stadium in Perth, Australia . It is named for its owner, the Western Australian Cricket Association, and is mainly used for sporting events such as cricket and Australian football .

history

The WACA Ground was officially established in 1893 as the Western Australian Cricket Association's playing field. He had signed a lease for 999 years with the state of Western Australia , the area of which originally also included the adjacent Gloucester Park racecourse . The first grandstands were erected in 1895 and more were added successively until 1929. The score display, which is still in operation today, was built in 1954 to replace a predecessor that had previously been destroyed by the weather. In 1986 a floodlight system was installed. In a renovation that was completed in 2002, the number of seats was reduced to around 20,000, which can be increased to 24,500 when the opportunity arises. Further renovations were planned as a result, but failed due to a lack of funding. Alternatively, a new multi-function stadium was built, the Perth Stadium , which was supposed to host games with a large audience. After its construction, all international games were placed in this new stadium and the WACA was reduced to a reduced audience capacity. The two ends of the pitch are called Members End and Prindiville Stand End .

use

Cricket

The first first-class match at this point was played in 1899. Since December 1970 the stadium has also been used for test matches by the Australian cricket team . At the Cricket World Cup in 1992 and 2015 , three preliminary round matches were held here. In August 2020, after the construction of the Perth Stadium , it was decided to convert the WACA into a training stadium and no longer provide for international cricket there.

Australian football

After the floodlights were installed, the stadium also became interesting for sports other than cricket. It was used from 1987 by the West Coast Eagles and from 1995 by the Fremantle Dockers for home games in the Australian Football League . Both teams moved to the Subiaco Oval in 2000 .

Other usage

Among other things, the stadium was also used for events in baseball and rugby league .
