WASP-12b is an exoplanet that orbits the star WASP-12 in 1.1 days. Because of its extremely short orbital period, it is suitable for examinations with space telescopes .
properties
The planet has a mass of 1.4 Jupiter and is counted among the Hot Jupiters . It was discovered in 2008 as part of the SuperWASP using the transit method.
Further investigations
Observations with land-based telescopes revealed a high concentration of carbon , which the Spitzer Space Telescope confirmed. The core of the planet could even consist of graphite or diamond . Due to the strong tidal forces, about 2500 K prevail on its surface .
In its atmosphere is water vapor detected.
Hubble observed in 2010 that WASP-12b is being consumed by its star and will be devoured in ten million years.
In 2017, during further research with Hubble, researchers discovered that the planet was one of the darkest objects known: it is darker than asphalt .
