history

WCBS started out in 1924 under the callsign WAHG from Richmond Hill, Queens . The operator was the radio manufacturer Alfred H. Grebe, who had been experimenting with radio broadcasts since 1921. He founded the historic Atlantic Broadcasting Company in 1926 and changed its name to WABC that year . Two years later, CBS bought the station and its operating company, thereby building its first radio station.

Stars like Bing Crosby , Burns & Allen and Kate Smith were guests or moderators at the station. In 1941 the station changed to the current frequency of 880 kHz and took the name of its owner as its call sign. Since November 3, 1946, the station has broadcast as Newsradio 88 ; In 1967 the name was expanded and redesigned into today's all-news radio by 1970 .
