The WCMC 2000 is an independent non-profit - conservation organization based in Cambridge in the UK .
history
The history of the organization goes back to 1979 when the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) opened an office in Cambridge. The task of this office was to monitor the development of endangered species in the world and to document them accordingly.
Following the World Conservation Strategy developed by the IUCN in 1980 , the IUCN founded the World Conservation Monitoring Center (WCMC ) in 1988 in a kind of joint venture with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) ) in Cambridge and brought in their existing office. A short time later, on January 9, 1989, which was World Conservation Monitoring Center of the England and Wales responsible Charity Commission the Charity status granted. In 1993 a new building was pulled just 4 km northwest of Cambridge for which the WCMC received the Green Award for Office in 1995 because of its environmentally friendly construction .
In the years up to 2000, the WCMC gained international recognition for its activities in the field of worldwide species protection and increasingly worked for UNEP and, through its connections, national and international decision-makers. So it was almost logical to align the activities of the WCMC more closely with UNEP. Following a decision of March 29, 2000, in a cooperation agreement, all employees and all activities of the World Conservation Monitoring Center were subordinated to UNEP on June 15, 2000 and the company was renamed the UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Center ( UNEP-WCMC ). The World Conservation Monitoring Center organization changed its name to WCMC 2000, kept all properties and furnishings, but left them to UNEP for use in return for a fee. The World Conservation Monitoring Center as the UNUP reportable but which has now shifted Charitable its activities in the background also face the WCMC 2000th
While for the WCMC 2000 the advantage of the cooperation with the UNEP was to increase its access and influence on national and international decision-makers in order to be able to achieve its goal better in the future, the UNEP saw its advantages in a more direct access to biodiversity - To get information, scientific know-how and better support for decision-making in matters of species protection .
