WLW ( Newsradio 700 WLW ) is an American radio broadcaster based in Cincinnati , Ohio . The station covers the metropolitan area of Cincinnati ( Greater Cincinnati ) and belongs to the radio company iHeartMedia . WLW is a clear channel radio station whose signal reaches large parts of the east coast at its frequency of 700 k Hz and can be heard in large parts of North America at night .
The station is an affiliate of ABC News Radio and the flagship of the Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds . WLW is the station of the well-known talk radio presenter Bill Cunningham . The transmitter of WLW is in Mason , Ohio . The 50 k W transmitter also transmits WLW in HD radio .
history
The station has been on the air since March 2, 1922. In the 1930s, WLW was one of two US broadcasters that temporarily broadcast with 500 kW. WLW broadcast with this achievement from 1934 to 1939. During this time the station used the slogan "The Nations Station".
In 1934, WLW was one of the four founding stations of the Mutual Broadcasting System .
The station became known to a larger audience through the soap opera Ma Perkins (1933) and the country music program Midwestern Hayride (1948).
