Wadi International University
The Wadi International University ( WIU ; Arabic جامعة الوادي الدولية الخاصة, DMG Ǧāmiʿat al-Wādī ad-duwaliyya al-ḫāṣṣa ) formerly Wadi German Syrian University ( WGSU ) is a private German-Syrian university in Wadi an-Nadara between the Syrian cities of Homs and Tartus .
history
On September 18, 2005, the private Wadi German Syrian University was opened, which was made possible by a decree of Bashar al-Assad from 2001, in which he allowed the establishment of private universities.
The Wadi Company for Education and Science, founded by influential Syrian business people and academics and German initiators such as the German Syrian Society for Science and Technology , the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg and the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service made this possible this project.
Under the leadership of the University of Magdeburg, in particular Claus Rautenstrauch , Vice President for Teaching and Research, the organizational structure, the development of curricula and the establishment of a quality management system for research and teaching were implemented.
In 2007 the cooperation agreement with the WGSU was extended.

criticism
The result of an independent evaluation by four internationally experienced scientists revealed unresolved undesirable developments and problem areas, through which, despite all the successes of the project, the quality standards for DAAD funding could no longer be guaranteed. For this reason, funding by the DAAD was discontinued at the end of the 2007/08 academic year.
