Wadsworth Falls State Park (also simply: Wadsworth Falls ) is a state park in the area of the cities of Middletown and Middlefield in the US state of Connecticut. The park is located in the northeast corner of Middlefield and extends over the city limits into Middletown, with the main entrance on Route 157 .

geography

The park covers an area of 115 hectares and has several hiking trails. The Coginchaug River , a tributary of the Connecticut River , crosses the park. It is possible to have a picnic and there is a small swimming lake with a cemented bottom. The water comes from springs near the Coginchaug River. A small bridge leads to the falls at Wadsworth Brook . Another creek in the park is the Laurel Grove Brook . Hampden basalt emerges in some places under the sandstone layers of the Portland Arkose .

The Wadsworth Falls

Wadsworth Falls is on the opposite side of the park from the main entrance and is accessible by car from Cherry Hill Road. Wadsworth Falls is approximately 9 m (30 feet) high and 16 m (52 feet) long. The water pours over sandstone banks.

history

The falls were named after Clarence C. Wadsworth, a Colonel in the New York National Guard . He owned the land on which the park extends today. Wadsworth had a good reputation as a scientist and was mainly concerned with linguistics. After settling in Middletown, where he was near Wesleyan University , he made it his business to protect Wadsworth Falls. With his will he founded the Rockfall Corporation , which was tasked with protecting the landscape, plants and animals on his property. In 1942 , 108 hectares of the land were given to the State of Connecticut.

The mansion

Even if it is not part of the state park's land, the Long Hill Estate mansion , which once belonged to Clarence C. Wadsworth, is in the immediate vicinity of the park . It can be visited on hiking trails. Today it is privately owned and is used as an event space after extensive renovations.
