Wafa Sultan ( Arabic وفاء سلطان Wafāʾ Sulṭān ; * 1959 in Baniyas , Syria ) is an American psychiatrist of Syrian origin.

She became known for her involvement in political debates in the Middle East . She herself was brought up in an Alawite manner, but has now described herself as secular , like the majority of the Alawi , since she witnessed the murder of her professor at the University of Aleppo by the Muslim Brotherhood . Her statement that the murder took place in the university is said to have been denied by the University of Aleppo . In 1989 she emigrated to the United States with her husband David Sultan ; both are now American citizens.

She had two spectacular appearances on talk shows on al-Jazeera . At the end of 2005, she discussed terrorism and religious education with the Algerian Islamist Ahmad bin Muhammad . She accused him of promoting the upbringing of children to be terrorists by having to memorize certain verses of the Koran at a young age without reflecting on them.

Her appearance at al-Jazeera on February 21, 2006 was picked up by numerous media and quickly spread through emails and weblogs. The topic of the talk show was freedom of expression and the attempt to understand its limits in western culture. This performance earned her not only death threats but also praise from reformers. On the talk show, she said ironically that the Muslims could thank the Israelis because they fulfilled the dream of martyrdom by killing Muslims.
