Armory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The armory is the oldest half-timbered house in Hildesheim from the early Renaissance period . It is located in the south of the city center on Gelber Stern Street .

history

The armory was built in 1548, as the year above the Gothic -looking entrance shows, and is one of the oldest surviving residential buildings in Hildesheim. It is an eaves - standing half-timbered house, the ridge line of which runs parallel to the street and which stands on a low sandstone plinth.

In the facade of the armory you can see colorful carvings and decorations, as they are typical for the pronounced need for jewelry and representation of the Renaissance . The guild sign above the entrance shows a gunsmith with a chain ball and wheel lock, above is a decorative beam that runs from the entrance to the corner post. Below it stand out in the area of the parapet three typical Renaissance fan rosettes, as well as the carved heads of two princes and two putti on the threshold . The cellar with a barrel vault still dates from the time the armory was built .

Presumably at the beginning of the 19th century, the house was renovated, in which the half-timbering and the threshold were renewed and the ground floor was redesigned. The armory survived the Second World War without any significant damage.

The Neiss Archive and Local History Museum is housed inside the armory , a collection to commemorate the twin town in Upper Silesia .
