Wagener , also: "Wagener, SC" is a city in Aiken County in the state of South Carolina in the United States of America . The city has 863 inhabitants (2000).

Wagener was first referred to as Pinder Town in 1887 , later as Guntersville or Gunter's Crossroad due to the settled "Gunter" family . The "Gunter" family also founded the First Company of the 20th SC Infantry, which fought in the Civil War.

The place is now in the land that formerly belonged to "Elridge Gunter". He donated his land to build a school and a church for the First Baptist Church . On the initiative of "JA Gunter" the city was named after "George Wagener", to whom the connection to the railway ( Southern Railroad ) was to be owed.

1989/1996 the monastery "Saints Mary and Martha Monastery" was founded in Wagener, SC by Archbishop Dimitri , Bishop of Dallas and the South of the Orthodox Church in America (Orthodox Church in America, OCA).

The city lives mainly from cotton cultivation .
