The Wairoa River is a river in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

In the Māori language , Wairoa means “long river”.

geography

The Wairoa River is created by the confluence of the two rivers, the Wairoa River Left Branch and the Wairoa River Right Branch, east of the Gordon Range and around 10 km south-southeast of Wakefield . From there, the river first flows in a meandering, then relatively straightforward to the north, and then after about 21 km along with the Wai-iti River to the Waimea River to form. This then flows northwest of Richmond into the Waimea Inlet , which in turn flows into the Tasman Bay .

Wairoa River Left Branch

The Wairoa River Left Branch rises north of the 1791  m high Maungakura / Red Hill in the Richmond Range , has a length of around 24.5 km and joins the foothills of the Gordon Range with the Wairoa River Right Branch to the east .

Wairoa River Right Branch

The Wairoa River Right Branch rises on the western flank of the 1,361  m high Mount Glennie in the Richmond Range and flows for 14.9 km along the eastern flanks of the Gordon Range .
