The forest humus beetle ( Ectinus aterrimus ) is a kind from the family of beetles (Elateridae).

features

The beetles are 10 to 15 millimeters long. Their body is pale shiny black in color and has brown hairs close together. The legs are dark brown-red, the antennae either the same or black in color. The latter reach in the males to the distinctive rear corners of the pronotum , in the females they are shorter. The species is characterized by its elongated "S" -shaped front ridges, which reach up to the frontal plate ( clypeus ). This distinguishes them from Agriotes pilosellus , whose front ridges do not reach the frontal plate and whose body is also red to dark brown in color.

Occurrence

The beetles are widespread in Europe as far as southern Norway , central Sweden and southern Finland , and east to Siberia . They are missing in the British Isles . The species is found in deciduous forests, from the plains to the valleys of the Alps . They fly from May to August.

Way of life

The adults can be seen on blossoms, bushes or dead wood. Like all other click beetles, the larvae live in the soil and feed on roots . They can occasionally cause damage to the roots of young plants in nurseries.
