Waldhaus Freiburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Waldhaus Freiburg ( own spelling WaldHaus ) is an environmental education facility in Freiburg im Breisgau .

history

In 1970 the Eichelbuck landfill was built in the Freiburg Mooswald . Around 23 hectares of forest were cleared for this purpose. The state forest law of Baden-Württemberg stipulates that forest losses must be compensated. However, there were no afforestation areas of this size. In 2003 it was decided that an environmental education facility could also serve to compensate for the loss of forests. This enabled the Waldhaus Freiburg Foundation to be established in 2005 . The equalization levy was not enough to enable the house to be built. It was possible to develop further financial sources with which the construction costs of 1.5 million euros and the operating costs can be borne. After a construction period of seven months, the forest house was opened on October 10, 2008.

The Waldhaus works as an educational institution with the aim of bringing people closer to the forest ecosystem and creating awareness for the sustainable use of forests. The Waldhaus is aimed at children and young people, the interested public and specialist audiences from home and abroad. Furthermore, the forest house carries out various projects in the areas of forest education, environmental education and education for sustainable development . In the implementation, the forest house cooperates z. B. with nature conservation associations, development policy initiatives, municipal offices, research institutions and forest companies and administrations . In addition, workshops, courses and seminars as well as cultural events such as concerts or theater performances are held for the general public.

Architecture and infrastructure

The back of the building

The modern wooden building and the outdoor facilities represent the transition from the city to the forest. The forest house is built into the slope. The ground floor, in which the entrance, the foyer and seminar rooms are located, opens with a wide glass front to the Günterstäler meadows and thus to the city. The exhibition level and another seminar room are located on the upper floor. A smaller glass front allows a view of the neighboring Freiburg city forest. The low-energy house is built from local wood and is equipped with a wood heating system, in which both logs and wood pellets can be burned. The wood workshop is separated from the actual forest house. This is equipped like a carpenter's workshop and is also available for courses. A special feature is that mainly green wood is processed here .

Themed trails

In the directly adjacent city forest there are various themed trails behind the forest house. The forest people sculpture path consists of 18 figures or groups of companies and was created by Thomas Rees . In November 2014, the Mycelium Mushroom Trail was opened, which was also designed by Thomas Rees. Here you follow a mycelium embedded in the ground through the forest to ten stations.
