The Waldmühle Library is a city ​​library in Soltau , Lower Saxony . It is the largest library in the Heidekreis district and part of the Common Library Network (GBV) .

Duration

In 2008 the Waldmühle library offered a total of 37,243 media. Compared to the previous year, the inventory increased by 1,826 media units. The inventory is divided into 13,067 non-fiction books, 5,992 novels, 9,880 books for young people, 271 media boxes, 699 magazines, 5,328 sound carriers, 1,075 DVDs, 604 CD-ROMs and 327 board games.

Forest mill

The forest mill , a watermill in the Bohemian region, is located next to the library building . The mill was probably first mentioned in a document as early as 936. At that time Otto I. donated what was then Curtis Salta "with bodies of water, watercourses and mills" to the Quedlinburg monastery . The grain and fulling mill came to the Verden cathedral chapter in 1321 . Although the mill was in the immediate vicinity of the city of Soltau, the millers were not allowed to buy grain in order to resell it processed. The mill processed fabrics for the Soltau cloth production. In 1801 the master miller Albrecht Müller obtained the right to inherit the mill from the von der Wense family from Dorfmark . A turbine was added at the end of the 19th century. GW Dransfeld, who operated a steam mill in Soltau, built a house next to the mill. Hans Meyer sold it to the city in 1973 after 14 years of ownership; three years later, the city and district began to convert the building into a library. The Soltauer Waldmühle is a station along the Lower Saxony Mill Road .

In 2008 a total of 3,848 people lent media, so the share of borrowers in relation to the population is 17.6% and thus well above the average in Lower Saxony (7.2%). There are also 119 institutions such as school classes and kindergarten groups. A total of 208,727 media were lent, which means that usage increased by 1.7% compared to the previous year. Each medium was therefore borrowed an average of 5.6 times. Sound carriers, CD-ROMs and DVDs account for 42% of the loans. 1,900 orders were processed as part of the German interlibrary loan system , with the library working closely with the Soltau grammar school and the commercial grammar school . In 2008, 11,976 users searched for media in the online catalog.

Opening times and staff

In 2008 the library was open 35 hours a week. The five personnel positions are currently occupied by nine employees. In addition, two trainees are being trained as “specialists for media and information services, specializing in the library” and numerous internships are given.

Events and projects

Mill building

The Waldmühle Library is an important cultural venue in the city of Soltau. Readings, concerts and exhibitions are held here several times a year. Up to 150 people can be seated in front of a 36 m² stage. The equipment includes a concert grand piano and a screen.

Since 2007 the library in Soltau has been participating in the summer reading club project of the NRW Culture Secretariat . In 2008, 345 young people from grade 5 took part and read at least three books during the summer vacation, which was then noted on the certificate. From 2009 there will also be a Junior Reading Club for students in grades 1 to 4.

From June 2006 to March 2007, the Waldmühle library took part in the “Library Profile in the Municipality” project, which the Lüneburg library was first offered in Lower Saxony. A profile was created that will now be implemented over time.

In the artist's apartment in Soltau above the library, writers, painters and musicians are regularly accepted, who return the favor with readings or exhibitions. The Waldmühle Library offers schools and kindergartens the ability to put together so-called media boxes, which contain books on a topic as well as corresponding CD-ROMs. In various medical practices and in the waiting area of ​​the town hall there is a waiting room library with changing offers for children.
