The Counts and Barons Waldner von Freundstein (in France: Waldner de Freundstein ) are a long-established Alsatian noble family that later also had possessions in the Ortenau .

Surname

Waldner or Waldenarii were mentioned as early as the 9th century, although there is no clear evidence of their existence and a connection to the Waldner von Freundstein. Their ancestral castle Freundstein (château de Freundstein) near Goldbach has been owned by the family since 1280. From about the 16th century onwards, the family chose Freundstein's surname .

history

Krafft von Gebweiler, known as Waldner, first mentioned in 1235, is regarded as the progenitor of the Waldner von Freundstein family. The family later had branches in Gebweiler , Sulz and Thann and their members served the Murbach Abbey , the Habsburgs and the Hochstifte Hochstift Strasbourg and Basel , where they were also represented in Basel in the cathedral chapter . Waldner von Freundstein also appear as citizens of Basel (1450) and Aarau (1547).

They were also influential in Switzerland through their marriage connections with well-known federal families such as von Hallwyl , von Mülinen and von Bärenfels . In the 18th century, Waldner von Freundstein worked as mercenary leaders of Swiss regiments for the French kings. From 1757 to 1783 there was the Régiment de Waldner . With Christian Friedrich Dagobert Waldner von Freundstein (1712–1783) the sex was raised to the French count status in 1748.

In 1711 the Waldner family came into possession of a share in the manor of Schmieheim and were enrolled in the Ortenau Imperial Knighthood. Other acquisitions outside of Alsace were an estate in the Palatinate Limburgerhof in 1823 and Weinheim Castle in 1837 .
