Seal of approval play well

The forest shadow game is a board game for children from about five years. It was conceived by Walter Kraul, who published it in 1985 in the self-publisher Kraul GmbH . The Children's Games and Toys Working Committee awarded the game the spiel gut seal of approval . In the newly released version from 1998, the material used (game board) received an improvement.

The forest shadow game differs from other children's and board games in that it can only be played in the dark . When playing, a tealight is pushed over the field with a small wooden slider - so an adult should always be there. It is designed as a social game where you help each other. You win if all players were able to save their dwarf figures or bring them home.

Game material

The game material consists of wood and cardboard . In addition to the wooden figures, there is a game plan printed on both sides, a slide that can also be covered with aluminum foil, a six-sided cube and ten Christmas trees of different sizes that can be plugged together.

Course of the game

According to the rules of the game, there are two variants of the forest shadow game. Both are designed for the cooperation of the other players. As the burning light source can be dangerous, the author recommends that the game be supervised by a responsible adult at all times. Alternatively, a commercially available electric light in the form of a tea light can also be used, possibly even with flickering. That makes it safer.

Variant forest run

The tea light is placed in a permanent place. You roll the dice in turn. Everyone has to run through the forest and at the end jump over the fire. Anyone who ends up in the shade of a tree has got lost. He can only be saved by a teammate if he manages to donate light with the help of the slider covered with aluminum foil.

Variation of meeting in hiding

There is a light guide (the adult) who moves the light in the course of the game with the slide according to the dice results. He has to announce which of the forest paths he intends to take at an intersection . The aim of the up to seven dwarfs playing is to always move in the shade and to meet under any tree without being enchanted by the light and thereby banned and immobilized. Those who are enchanted can be redeemed as soon as another player takes the place, when shadows have re-entered through the moving light.

Scientific component

Through this game, the children not only get to know the phenomena of light and shadow , but also deal with reflections and perspectives , as well as the change in shadows caused by a moving light source. It therefore particularly promotes scientific competence in kindergarten in a playful way.
