Waldwissen.net is an international, multilingual information and communication platform in the forest and forestry sectors . The editors are the Forest Research and Research Institute Baden-Württemberg (FVA) , the Bavarian State Institute for Forests and Forestry (LWF) , the Austrian Federal Research and Training Center for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape (BFW) and the Federal Research Institute for Forests, Snow and Landscape (WSL) .

The institutes involved make their current research results available on the website and offer contacts to experts. The target groups are forest decision-makers in practice and the interested public. The interactive platform has established itself in Central Europe as an online source of information on the topics of forests and forestry . In May 2018 over 3300 items were available.

organization

In addition to the four publishing research institutes from Germany , Austria and Switzerland , the following partner institutes participate in waldwissen.net: the Sachsenforst state enterprise (SBS) , the North Rhine-Westphalia forest and wood enterprise (WUH) , the state competence center Forst Eberswalde (LFE) and the Institut national de la recherche agronomique (INRA) in Nancy.

Both the publisher and the partner finance an independent editorial team from their own resources, which continuously prepares new, well-founded and up-to-date specialist knowledge and inserts it into the platform as compact articles. The currently eight editorial offices also work together with other organizations, for example with the Federal Office for the Environment FOEN , the Swiss Accident Insurance Institute , the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach , the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna and the Rottenburg University of Applied Sciences for Forestry .

history

Forest ecosystem

In order to make existing specialist knowledge available to a broader base, WSL Birmensdorf launched the idea of providing practical knowledge from forest and environmental research in a place that is easily accessible to everyone. In summer 2003 the prototype waldwissen.ch went online.

The experiences from waldwissen.ch were very positive. At the same time, the four research institutions active in forest research, FVA Freiburg , LWF Freising , BFW Vienna and WSL Birmensdorf, intensified their efforts to develop a joint forest information system with internationally compiled content. This project was part of the KnowForAlp initiative, which comprised a total of 19 institutions from seven countries. This resulted in waldwissen.net, which went online on February 16, 2005.

Over time, not only did the number of available contributions increase, the platform was technically developed in parallel. In 2007, waldwissen.net was awarded the 50,000 euro innovation prize for the European forestry and wood industry, the Schweighofer Prize. The jury was particularly impressed by the internationality, the multilingualism and the well-founded contributions by waldwissen.net. The prize money was used for the further development and redesign of the website. Waldwissen.net has also been available as a mobile app for Android and Apple iOS since mid-2015 .
